Vehicles heavier or larger than the standard dimensions need special permits to travel on the road.

To protect Tasman district's road network, there are strict controls on the overall weight and axle loads of vehicles. If your vehicle exceeds the limits because of the indivisible load you're carrying, or the vehicle's design, you need to apply for an overweight permit before you travel.
Applications for overweight permits should be submitted through the O-permit system on the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency website .
Please allow five working days for all permit applications.
It is the permit-holder's responsibility to ensure that a written request is sent for the renewal of any Continuous and Area permits prior to the permit expiry date.

If you want to carry divisible loads, such as logs, milk powder or freight more productively you may be able to operate on a high productivity motor vehicle (HPMV) permit.
HPMV permits will only be approved for suitable vehicles carrying divisible loads of economic importance. Permitted vehicles must also be able to travel on routes that are suitable for the vehicle and load being approved.

Land Transport Rule 41001: Vehicle Dimensions and Mass 2016 (the rule) provides the dimension limits for vehicles operating on New Zealand roads. Clause 6.49 of the rule requires that the operator of a motor vehicle must apply for and be issued with a permit by Waka Kotahi if the vehicle:
has a width and forward distance combination in category 3 or category 4, or
has a height exceeding 5m, or
has a front or rear overhang exceeding 7m, or
has an overall length exceeding 25m, or
exceeds any of the dimension limits specified in category 4.
