Following a positive public response to the outdoor exhibition in Nelson’s City Centre, The Suter Art Gallery has extended the ArtWalk project to our District, installing replicas of paintings from its permanent collection in full view of pedestrians.
Artist John Gully
Works by artists Irvine Major and his wife Jean Joyce are displayed in the library’s courtyard, while pioneer painter John Gully’s 1886 watercolour Wangapeka Valley is erected on the side wall of Webby Way.
A fourth painting by artist Ian Scott, entitled Green Light is on the exterior of the nearby Warring Carpark toilet block.
"Uprooted" by Philip Edwards features on the Tasman District Council office in Queen Street, Richmond.
More artworks are expected to be exhibited on blank walls in Richmond, Motueka, Tākaka and potentially Māpua in the future.

The Suter Art Gallery’s Tasman ArtWalk has turned Richmond’s town centre into an alfresco gallery of sorts in recent months, providing a visual journey through our region; stories, people, places, history and outstanding scenery.
The latest installation of the outdoor exhibition – backed by Council and community supporters – has allowed us a window of opportunity to display another fine work.
New Zealand artist Philip Edwards’ 1987 work Uprooted is now displayed on the exterior of our Queen Street office building.
Testament to his meticulously-crafted and highly realistic approach to painting, Uprooted was created using the 'trompe l'oeil' (trick the eye) effect to give the impression of looking at a tree fallen across a farm track through an open window.
The three-dimensional illusion is enhanced by the artist's skilful handling of light and shadow when painting two onions sitting on the windowsill.
The work was sourced from a bequest made to The Suter by Shirley Miles in 2018.
