A break in a wastewater pipe has been found in Broadsea Avenue at Ruby Bay which means there’s a shellfish harvesting ban until further notice.

A resident called us when they noticed a slump in the footpath.

The damaged pipe is relatively small and connects the house to the sewer main in the street and is some distance from the shoreline.

At this stage we’re not sure when the pipe was damaged, nor how much untreated sewage leached out through the sand.

We will be carrying out environmental testing to find out if there is any contamination in the tidal area.

But as a precaution people should not harvest shellfish from the area along the Ruby Bay coastline adjacent to Broadsea Avenue until the all clear is given.
