Building Consents Complaints process

An explanation of how to make a complaint regarding a building control function, or a decision made by our team.

If you want to make a complaint regarding a building control function, please contact us in writing:

Building Assurance Manager, 189 Queen Street, Private Bag 4, Richmond 7050.

Or emailed to: building.support@tasman.govt.nz

The complaint may be delegated to the appropriate Building staff member, who will acknowledge the complaint within 10 working days. We may be required to gather additional information or arrange an additional site inspection if necessary. After we have investigated the complaint we will contact you to advise of the outcome.

What if I don’t agree with the outcome?

Where the complaint is with regards to our decision with respect to building work, you may apply to MBIE for a determination.

Determination process

A determination is a legally binding ruling made by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) about matters of doubt or dispute to do with building work. They are not for civil disputes or disputes about workmanship.
