Stormwater

Stormwater flows directly to streams, rivers and beaches - so we need to make sure only rain and clean tap water go down the outside drains.

Stormwater and wastewater are not a good mix: Wastewater overflows explained

The stormwater system is designed to contain, channel and pipe rainfall and natural water run off into rivers and sea. It is untreated, and separate from the wastewater/ sewage system.

Stormwater is of concern for two main reasons:

  • the volume and timing of runoff water, and
  • potential contaminants that the water is carrying.
