Private Plan Change Request 61: Wainui Bay Spat Catching

This Plan Change became operative on 14 December 2019.

Wainui Bay Spat Catching group requested a change to the Tasman Resource Management Plan. This private plan change sought to provide the marine farming industry with certainty that spat catching farms in Wainui Bay can continue beyond the current term of consent (2024). To achieve this certainty, the private plan change proposed to rezone the eight spat catching sites to a newly created zone - AMA 4 - Wainui. Within this zone mussel spat catching (<40 mm) and mussel spat holding (40-60 mm) are controlled activities and mussel farming (>60 mm) is prohibited. Amended policy and text recognised the national and regional importance of the area for spat catching. No new space or activities were proposed.
