Note about crossing the Dart Ford river by vehicle

If you want to cross the Dart Ford river in your car, the general rule of thumb is that conditions are often suitable when the river flow at Wangapeka at Walters Peak is less than 40 cumecs (m3/s).

This does not mean you should cross the ford when you arrive at that location however. At times the flow shown on the website can be inaccurate, or the Dart River may be flowing higher than the Wangapeka indicates, or the culverts under the ford may be choked with gravel.

Always re-assess the flow conditions across the ford once you arrive there, without being guided by the Wangapeka flow, and take a particularly conservative approach. Also view the predicted weather conditions to consider whether the ford will be passable on your return.
