Waste Minimisation Grant for Schools, Early Childhood Education and Community Groups

Grants to support waste minimisation activities in Tasman schools, early childhood centres and community organisations.

We have waste minimisation grants available to support community initiatives that aim to minimise waste in Tasman schools, early childhood education centres or community groups.

As well as reducing waste, these grants are intended to support education on elements of the waste hierarchy, namely:

  • Rethinking how we use and value our resources;
  • Reducing the creation of waste;
  • Reusing resources;
  • Recycling

Priority will be given to applications which:

  • Enable new activities, rather than supporting existing activities;
  • Focus on the top layers of the waste hierarchy (rethink, reduce, reuse); and
  • Include a whole-school or whole organisation approach.

Grant amounts

Typical allocation for each grant will be in the vicinity of $500, however applications of up to $1000 will be considered.

Criteria

Applications must be for a specific waste minimisation project or initiative that will:

  • Be carried out by a Tasman school, early childhood centre or community group;
  • Take place within the Tasman District, and/or demonstrate benefit to Tasman residents;
  • Demonstrate how waste will be avoided or diverted from landfill; and
  • Focus on one or more elements of the waste hierarchy.

In addition, applications must:

  • Be submitted on the official application form (see below);
  • Identify how funds will be spent;
  • Come under the umbrella of a recognised entity with legal status – for example a school, early childhood education centre, charitable organisation or incorporated society. Where this is not possible (for example applications from recognised iwi groups without formal legal status) applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The grant can be used for:

  • Project set-up and/or running costs;
  • Capital costs (e.g. purchase of tools/equipment);
  • Operating costs;
  • Material and equipment hire;
  • Monitoring and evaluation of volume of waste diverted from landfill.

Application dates

Applications are open all year round. Successful applicants must use the funds within 12 months of receiving them.

Accountability

Successful applicants will be required to complete an accountability report at the end of the project using this form
