There are some nationwide changes coming in the world of recycling from 1 February, but nothing will change for us here in Tasman.

From that date, all councils across the country providing domestic kerbside recycling collections must collect the same items for recycling, which is something we’ve been doing for a while.

By doing this, the government intends to reduce confusion about what can and can’t be recycled and improve the percentage of items being recycled.

Do you realise that in Aotearoa New Zealand only about a third of materials are recycled, and the rest goes to landfill?

But here in Tasman, the good news is we’re ahead of the game and already meet the new national standards by collecting plastics 1, 2 and 5, cans, glass containers and paper/cardboard.

Lids continue to be excluded from kerbside collections because they can trap liquids and foods and are usually too small to make it through the sorting process.
