Appleby

Appleby is the country district around the lower Waimea River about five kilometres outside Richmond.

The area was first settled in the early 1840s and before the Appleby Bridge was built, there were a number of accommodation inns in the area.

Appleby has long been a stronghold for dairy farming. Over the past two decades the range of agricultural activities has diversified: hops, apples, berries, mixed gardening and kiwifruit are well-established and, in more recent years, vineyards have become an increasingly common sight.
