Building Placards

Red – indicates the building cannot be used and entry is prohibited because it has sustained moderate or heavy damage and poses a significant risk to health or life. This could be from the building itself, from external factors such as adjacent buildings, or from ground failure.

Yellow - indicates the building may have sustained moderate damage and access is restricted. This generally means either some identified areas of the building pose a significant hazard and cannot be used, or that you cannot enter except under supervision for a limited time on essential business. This could include emergency or assessment purposes, for example, or removing critical business records, valuables and property.

White - indicates a building has suffered light or no damage and can be used. However, a white placard doesn't necessarily mean the building is safe, as there could be unobserved damage.

If your property has been Red Stickered and is unable to be occupied it is important you talk to your insurance company to discuss your alternative accomodation options.

Remedial work will depend on the reason the placard was placed on your property.  We recommend you seek advice from your insurance company or a suitably qualified person prior to commencing any repair works.  

• If you obtained a building consent, the placard status will be reviewed during the final inspection.
• If work required a building consent, but due to the urgent nature has been carried out without consent a Certificate of Acceptance will need to be applied for. The placard will be reviewed during this process.
• If no building consent was required for the work, you can inform us the work is complete by filling in the "Owner requested placard change or removal declaration," or if the work involved an engineer they can fill in the "Engineer requested placard change or removal form."

Please return your completed form to building.support@tasman.govt.nz with any additional and supporting documents. Once recieved we will process your form and be in contact with you. An additional Inspection may be required.
