Stock Droving

If you are moving stock along or across a road in the Tasman district, it is paramount to ensure the safety of you, your stock, and other road users.

We have a Stock Control and Droving Bylaw, which is designed to improve road safety, reduce damage caused to the road and vehicles,  and provide protection of freshwater from stock effluent on the road reserve.

Why a Bylaw?

• To provide for safe and orderly droving and movement of stock along and across all roads.
• To protect the safety of road users.
• To ensure stock effluent and mud do not cause a nuisance on the road and do not impact the health of waterways.
• To assist with droving coordination.

How to register your stock drove or crossing

If your stock movement is:

• Along or across a road within any urban or residential area,
• Along or across a State Highway, 
• Over a distance greater than 5 kilometres, or 
• For milking purposes during hours of darkness.

You are required to register with the Council, in writing, five (5) working days prior to the activity.   Registration is free. and you can easily do this by using our designated Stock droves or crossings registration form or by requesting an application form from Council’s Customer Service Team (03 5438400 or info@tasman.govt.nz) and we will email or post a form to you.

Please note: If the stock movement is regular or reoccurring the drover or person in charge of stock only needs to register once for the ongoing activity unless circumstances change.
