We manage 518 bridges in the Tasman District and each year some are earmarked for replacement or maintenance.
There are a number of historical suspension bridges with the oldest being the 91.4 metre Pokororo foot bridge at Ngātīmoti, built in 1894. Others include the Salisbury footbridge over the Aorere River in Golden Bay, built in 1902 and washed away in 2010, and the Baton River footbridge which was built in 1906.

Advice for crossing the Dart Ford river by vehicle
If you want to cross the Dart Ford river in your car, the general rule of thumb is that conditions are often suitable when the river flow at Wangapeka at Walters Peak is less than 40 cumecs (m3/s). This does not mean you should cross the ford when you arrive at that location however. At times the flow shown on the website can be inaccurate, or the Dart River may be flowing higher than the Wangapeka indicates, or the culverts under the ford may be choked with gravel. Always re-assess the flow conditions across the ford once you arrive there, without being guided by the Wangapeka flow, and take a particularly conservative approach. Also view the predicted weather conditions to consider whether the ford will be passable on your return.
